National Assembly - Speaker calls on foreign supervisors, managers to respect laws and people of Seychelles |20 September 2017

Following complaints of disrespect, unfair and mistreatment of Seychellois employees by their non-Seychellois supervisors and managers in different workplaces namely hotel establishments and other private sector institutions, companies and businesses, the chairperson of the Anti-victimisation Committee in the National Assembly Speaker Patrick Pillay has called for respect of the laws of Seychelles and the Seychellois people as a nation.

“We are a very friendly and welcoming nation and we welcome foreigners to come and work in our country to contribute to its development because we do not have all the skills that are needed to ensure our economy functions/operates in an efficient manner. But we expect two things from you and as Speaker of the Assembly, the elected body that represents the people of Seychelles, I call on you to respect the laws of Seychelles and respect the Seychellois,” Speaker Pillay said.

“We, the people of Seychelles, expect certain standards from expatriates/non-Seychellois working in management positions in Seychelles,” Speaker Pillay said while expressing the hope that human resource managers in the above mentioned companies and institutions are taking note of his  comments.

“While we are a welcoming and friendly nation we expect to be treated with respect irrespective of what position we hold in your organisations. We expect no less and as chair of the Anti-victimisation Committee if you come before us and start to be sarcastic wondering whether we are a court of law to call you, let me tell you that you will respect us. Though I am talking in general you know very well who you are and my advice to you is to respect the laws of Seychelles, respect the people of Seychelles,” Speaker Pillay stressed.
