Saviona Isaac selected to follow Yali programme |20 September 2017

Saviona Isaac has been selected by the Young African Leaders Initiative organisation to be part of the next cohort to attend a month-long course on civic leadership in South Africa starting on September 25.

The whole course is sponsored by the Young African Leaders Initiative (Yali) organisation which is based in the United States of America and was launched by former US President Barack Obama.

It gathers a group of young African people with the same goals, who are passionate about helping others and finding solutions to some of the social issues that are affecting their countries and Africa in general.

“I'm interested in issues such as physical, sexual, emotional abuse and women rights. That's the reason why I decided to apply. This course in South Africa aims to help young Africans to work together and be more innovative,” Ms Isaac told Seychelles NATION.

“Together with a diverse group of young aspirant leaders from across the Southern Africa region, you will be exposed to a highly engaging and interactive programme designed to empower your scholarship and collaboration. The programme requires your full commitment for the entire seven weeks. We believe that once you’ve successfully completed the seven-week programme (four weeks residential and three weeks in country of origin), you will be a part of the next generation of innovative leaders who are empowered to shape the future of business/entrepreneurship, civic leadership and public management in Africa,” wrote the organisers when congratulating Saviona on being successful in applying for the scholarship.

South Africa is one of the four Yali regional leadership centres in Africa and the other three are Ghana, Kenya and Senegal.

These centres serve as regional hubs across the continent to encourage transformational learning and enhancing leadership skills.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders is the flagship programme of the Yali which was launched in 2010 to support young Africans as they spur growth and prosperity, strengthen democratic governance, and enhance peace and security across Africa.

The Yali programme is divided into three groups, namely business and entrepreneurship, civic leadership and public management.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship, which began in 2014, brings young leaders to the United States for academic coursework and leadership training and creates unique opportunities in Africa for Fellows to put new skills to practical use in leading organisations, communities, and countries.
