School of Music hosts annual students’ concert |05 October 2017

The School of Music held its annual students’ concert on Saturday 30 September where the students performed in front of a mixed audience that comprised parents, fellow students, friends and members of the school’s Parents Teachers Association.

They performed a variety of music ranging from classical, modern and local that was very well appreciated.

The concert was scheduled to coincide with World Music Day (WMD). WMD was initiated on October 1, 1975 by internationally renowned violinist Yehudi Menuhin. It was first organised by the International Music Council on October 1, 1975, in accordance with the resolution taken at the 15th General Assembly in Lausanne in 1973.

The International Music Council (IMC) or the guardian of the IMD was founded by Unesco in 1949. The IMC is the world's largest network of organisations, institutions and individuals functioning in the field of music. The IMC encourages and fosters musical diversity, access to culture for everyone and unites organisations in some 150 countries worldwide in building peace and understanding among people cutting across class, culture and heritage.

“On International Music Day, the desired aim is to create a global atmosphere of music, a platform for people to come together with their diversities and mingle to make one unified whole. Like any other artistic or cultural celebrations the day is generally to celebrate art and to successfully realise these activities, it is essential to mobilise all means at our disposal in the 21st century -- the radio and television, concert societies, opera companies, amateur societies; a great many different types of localities should all be used to their best advantage..” ( from the site of International Music Day)

Twenty-nine students playing the violin, piano, cello, clarinet, xylophone, drums, guitar and also a vibrant Kamtole band from the school’s traditional music took part in the two-hour show.

The accompanying photos show some of the students in action during the concert.
