Deepening Seychelles-EU ties |12 October 2017

Marjaana Sall, Ambassador of the European Union (EU) to Seychelles, has called on President Danny Faure and Vice-President Vincent Meriton as part of the ongoing political dialogue.

The visits took place yesterday morning at State House.

Speaking to the media following the visits, Ambassador Sall said they discussed the broad relationship between the EU and Seychelles and how to deepen it even further.

“We discussed how to change the relationship in light of the new global and developmental challenges that Seychelles and the region are facing,” she said.

She highlighted the various areas where the EU and Seychelles can partner and those include mainly trade and investment, broader ocean governance, maritime security, Blue economy and climate change.

Ambassador Sall said Seychelles plays an important role in regional organisations such as the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa), African Union (AU) and also globally at the United Nations (UN) where partnerships can be made to deal with various issues linked to good governance and building democracies.

She also congratulated President Faure on the steps he has taken on cohabitation.

“I think Seychelles is really leading the democratic developments in the region and you are also a good example to other countries on the continent. So I congratulate the president on these moves,” she said.

Ambassador Sall and members of her delegation comprising 13 EU member states ambassadors have also met with other stakeholders in the country such as the civil society, parliament, the chief justice and others.

She also noted how pleased her delegation is with the variety of discussions which have been held.
