Letter to the Editor - A coin always has two sides |13 October 2017

Following the capture and return to Seychelles of the male and female fugitives wanted in connection with drug trafficking, I heard lawyer and politician Alexia Amesbury said that she requested the renewal of their passports so they could return to Mahé earlier.

Tuesday night’s news repeated Ms Amesbury saying the same thing.

I suppose Ms Amesbury thinks all Seychellois cannot think.

But who is she kidding?

When the couple left Seychelles they must have had their Seychellois passports. They were wanted. Why didn’t they choose to return to Seychelles before their passports expired? It was the wisest thing to do, and to clear their names.

Ms Amesbury may or may not know that Seychelles’ passport is the most powerful in Africa.

According to the Passportindex.org, Seychellois nationals can visit 96 countries visa-free and 30 with issuance of a visa on arrival, bringing the total to 126.

With the passport renewed and sent to them while in Tanzania, it would have been easier for the two fugitives to flee to other countries. To any of the 126 countries where it is easy for Seychellois nationals to enter.

Actually, Ms Amesbury and the Seychellois passport authorities would have facilitated the couple’s non-return.

A coin always has two sides.
