STA hosts job fair |21 October 2017

STA students had the opportunity to know what the various tourism enterprises have on offer in terms of career opportunities

The Seychelles Tourism Academy (STA) yesterday organised its annual job fair at its La Misère campus.

The job fair was intended for graduates who will soon be leaving STA next year to enter the world of work.

It was an opportunity for the students to see what the different establishments have to offer as careers.

The job fair was a perfect way for the students to explore their future and to start thinking about employers and jobs of interest in the hospitality and tourism industry.

Hotels present were Paradise Sun, Kempinski, Fregate Island Resort, Constance Group( Ephelia & Lemuria), Hilton Seychelles, Savoy, Raffles, Avani, and La Reserve.

Also present were the national airline, Air Seychelles, Jobo (an advertising platform), Job Plus (recruitment agency) and the ministry of employment who was there to register students who will be leaving STA and will be entering the world of work next year.

There were different jobs on offer from cook, waitress, chambermaid, receptionist, front office, representative, desk counter and others in the airline to name a few.

The students navigated through the job fair asking questions, filling out forms and taking brochures as establishments compete to attract and to get the best students.

All described the turn-out at their stalls as very good and positive showing that the students really want to work.

Most of the students said they were happy with the job fair as it gives them the opportunity to see first hand and to choose what jobs are available that they would like to do and where.

Philip Monthy, assistant director of studies at STA and fair organising member, said the fair gives the students the opportunity to choose which hotel they would like to work at.

“Even though they have been on work attachments at such and such hotels, it does not mean that they want to work at that hotel. So they get the chance to see other hotels they have not worked at on attachment. It is also an opportunity for the establishments to be on site and compete for the best students leaving STA,” he added.

Mr Monthy also said two years ago the job fair was open for the public and STA is thinking of inviting the public to the fair next year.

Contacted by phone after the job fair, Mr Monthy told Seychelles NATION that STA was very happy with the job fair as it got positive feedback from the establishments.

“As you know, there are those that got more students enrolling with them than others but on the whole they were all very happy,” said Mr Monthy.

In a speech to open the job fair in the morning, the principal of STA, Flavien Joubert, reminded the students how they were lucky to get a unique and rare opportunity to have business partners offering them careers on their doorstep. “Dear students, please use this opportunity and start working immediately upon completion of your studies early next year. This industry will provide you with a conducive life and plenty of happy and rewarding adventures. Tourism and airline are one of the best careers in the world,” he told them.
