Members of the public joined the Soroptimist International Club of Victoria dressed in pink to walk in solidarity with family members of victims and survivors of breast cancer.

Health minister Jean-Paul Adam was among the group of people who walked down the Beau Vallon beach on Friday to help raise awareness.

The club also had the opportunity to raise funds through the sale of t-shirts and various mementos such as stickers, ribbons, pencils were also being given in return for a small contribution.

The Club President Angelika Maurel was hoping for a nice turn out for this fourth walk but with all the various activities which were taking place last Friday, it had an impact on the turn out.

“This walk helps to raise awareness of cancer related issues and to show solidarity with the people that suffer from cancer while also remembering those victims who are no longer with us because of cancer,” she said.

She noted that this walk is now part of their annual even on their calendar as a walk is healthy to keep the body fit while also receiving a breath of fresh air.

Mrs Maurel said at the moment the club is refurbishing the oncology unit at the Victoria hospital in collaboration with the Round Table and the Cancer Concern Association (CCA).

“By the time the project is finished it would have cost around R2 million and it is expected to open mid-November,” she said.

People were also able to donate to their cause on Saturday as the Soroptimist International Club of Victoria organised a Pink Link event in town.

The members were around town selling pink ribbons to help raise cancer awareness.
