Sustainable energy month closes with prize-giving, book donation |02 November 2017

The awareness campaign promoting the use of sustainable energy for the whole month of October came to an end on Tuesday morning with a prize-giving ceremony and donation of books.

The ceremony to end the month-long activity took place at the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change, Le Chantier Mall.

The month was dedicated to educating the public and increase their awareness on the use of sustainable energy and water efficiency technologies.

The awareness campaign, which was launched on October 6, was organised by the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change in collaboration with the GOS-UNDP-GEF resource Efficiency Project, the Seychelles Energy Commission (Sec) and the Public Utilities Corporation (PUC).

During the closing ceremony, those who took part in different activities such as questionnaires for raffle draw and radio quiz were rewarded with their prizes

Present at the closing ceremony were the chief executive of Sec Tony Imaduwa, GOS-UNDP-GEF resource efficiency project manager Elaine Ernesta, ESO coordinator in the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development Shane Emilie, sponsors, prize recipients and affiliated environment and sustainability personnel.

During a week-long sustainable trade fair at the Exile Club, in which nine local enterprises dealing in sustainable energy efficiency appliances took part, the public were able to view the stalls and interact with owners and where they were able to fill a questionnaire for a raffle draw. On the radio, a quiz was run on a daily basis and winners were put in a final draw.

It is to be noted that all winners were female.

For the trade fair, Elizabeth Hoareau won the star prize, a solar water heater sponsored by the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change.

Rebecca Fernandez won a 3KWH PV system, sponsored by Vetiver Tech while Anaelle Renaud won a Toshiba hybrid inverter aircon, sponsored by Machinery & Equipment.

The radio quiz star prize winner, Marie-Claudette Bamboche, won a solar water heater also sponsored by the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change.

The prizes were presented by Mr Imaduwa, Miss Ernesta and Radley Weber of Vetiver Tech.

Also to mark the closure of the energy month, the Sec donated 500 children’s books on sustainable energy to the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development.

Through these drawing, crossword and word search exercise colouring books, the children will learn more about energy and water efficiency tips in an interactive manner.

Mr Imaduwa presented the books to Mr Emilie who collected on behalf of the ministry.

The books will also be distributed to orphanages, private schools and the National Library.

During the month-long awareness campaign, a series of activities were organised such as the mentioned trade fair, exchange of energy saving bulbs, visits to renewable energy facilities, talks, presentations, which targeted work organisations, school children and the general public.

Mr Imaduwa said the month-long activity was successful both in terms of participation of the public and enterprises and he hoped for a bigger activity next year.
