Byenal Sesel 2017 - Visual artists present themselves, their drawings and paintings |15 November 2017

The first presentation by the different visual artists taking part in this year’s Byenal Sesel 2017 organised by the National Arts Council (Nac), started on Monday evening at the Carrefour des Arts near the National Library.

This was held in the presence of Nac’s chief executive Jimmy Savy.  

It was Colbert Nourrice of Seychelles who first presented himself and his work to the audience where he delivered a biography, artist statement, presented some of his drawings and paintings.

Colbert, whose work is based on everyday life, was born on July 8, 1964 at Victoria, Seychelles.

A short summary of Colbert’s biography: “Education: A level certificate in Fine Arts and a Bachelor’s Degree in Education (Arts Education) at the University of Sussex, Falmer, United Kingdom. His work has as example social and political issues, traditional themes like music and dance; environmental subjects like the ocean and landscape.

Colbert’s paintings are shown in various styles such as symbolic, narrative, semi-abstract, abstract and representational and realistic. He works with mainly acrylic ox mix-media techniques on canvas.

Presentations by other artists, both local and foreign, continued yesterday and will go on during the whole week.

Apart from the eleven Seychellois, artists from different countries, both regional and elsewhere, are taking part notably from Mauritius, Reunion, Zambia, Australia, Canada, India.

The presentations will culminate on Friday with a prize giving ceremony. But before that various side events namely exhibitions will be staged.

“There will be a ‘vernissage’ exhibition at the Indian high commission. The Byenal will end on Sunday November 25 with an arts award and biennal prize-giving ceremony at 6pm at the International Conference Centre (ICCS),” said Nigel Henrie, Biennale Commissioner.
