UniSey’s diploma and certificate courses |16 November 2017

196 students graduate

A total of 196 students have graduated from University of Seychelles’ diploma and certificate courses in two separate ceremonies.

The ceremonies were held yesterday at the University of Seychelles (UniSey) auditorium, Anse Royale.

First to receive their graduation documents in the morning ceremony were the certificate students.

In attendance were UniSey’s vice-chancellor, deans of faculties, lecturers and the graduates’ parents and family members.

Former President James Michel was also present during the diploma graduation in his capacity as the Chancellor.

Best performers for certificate courses included Marie-May Larue (General Management), Marie-Ange Michel (Human Resource Management), Marie-France Cedras (Library and Information Sciences), Estephanie Dodin (Office Management), Angelic Appoo (Public Procurement), Norma Bonne (Introductory Certificate in Financial and Management Accounting) and Fabrina Molle (Intermediate Certificate in Financial and Management Accounting).

Those who came out on top for the diploma courses were as follows:  Denis Joseph (Computing and Information Systems), Darius Hoareau (Computing and IT in Software Development), Velma Esparon (Advanced Diploma in Accounting and Business), Sandra Laurence (General Management) and Jeva Confiance (Human Resource Management).

In his commencement speech Vice-Chancellor Dennis Hardy stated that the university has undergone numerous transformations and achieved quite a lot since its inception in 2009, but also emphasised that it still has a long way to go.

“More than in any other time in history we see rapid changes in the constitution of our economies and so what we have to have are people who are prepared to look ahead and who are lured by fresh challenges. One of the tasks of a university is to provide that ongoing vitality and energy that a nation needs,” said Vice-Chancellor Hardy.

Referring to UniSey’s strategic plan, Vice-Chancellor Hardy described his aspirations for a future campus full of modern facilities that act as regional centres, formal and informal settings which motivate students, and a student target population of more than 2,000 comprising “as much local students as foreign ones”.

He added that for any such of these to become a reality the university has to divert its focus towards its degree programmes and research facilities to achieve its vision of becoming the leading knowledge hub of the Indian Ocean.

One of the major steps the university is undertaking to achieve this feat is to detach itself from the Guy Morel Institute, effective as from 2018.

In an interview with the press the best performer for the Certificate in Human Resource Management, Marie-Ange Michel, said her success was the result of perseverance and hard work.

This message was also expressed by the top diploma performers of which many had to juggle work, school, children and family life for three years.
