To commemorate the World Diabetes Day celebrated recently, members of the diabetic society and Lions of Seychelles, accompanied by the Minister for Health, Jean-Paul Adam, took part in an early morning walk at the Stad Popiler car park.

As a part of the group’s commitment to prevent diabetes by following a healthy lifestyle PillayR group had decided to provide each participant with one cup of Pascual sugar free natural yoghurt  which is believed to be a good product for people who want to avoid diabetes.

“If we can address healthy living in society, the risk of diabetes would be greatly reduced,” says

D. V. Sharma, general manager of PillayR group.

“We need to make 89% of the population free from the risk of diabetes by consuming products like Pascual natural yoghurts,” says Mr Sharma.

“The U.S. Department of Agriculture currently recommends unsweetened plain or Greek yogurt as a great way for people with diabetes to fulfill one or even two of these daily recommended servings, as well as to get a good dose of calcium,” adds Mr Sharma.

On that same day the Lions Club of Seychelles in collaboration with the health professionals of the west region conducted a diabetes screening programme for the public at the Beolière health centre. The aim of the session was to educate them to control diabetes and minimise the complications though medical screening, dental screening and a quiz.

Here again all those who came for checking were provided with one cup of free Pascual natural yoghurt and all the winners were given pack of 4 as prizes.

“It is estimated that over 5000 Seychellois are living with diabetes and many of them are not aware of their condition. The National Survey of Non-communicable disease reveals that 11 out of each hundred people in this country have diabetes. A lot more people are slowly developing the condition, which can lead to serious complications if poorly controlled and affect one’s quality of life.

Diabetes is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attack, stroke and lower limb amputation. Diabetes could be prevented through the adoption of a healthy lifestyle.  That is a healthy diet and physical activity.

Our health is ultimately a personal responsibility and accepting that responsibility is the first step to fight diabetes both in terms of prevention and management.
