SIT to partner with Vello Institute of Technology |24 November 2017

Our modern society is shaped by an array of technologies that allow us to transform our environment and bring economical as well as social changes which bring about a higher quality of life. For this, we need well-trained technicians and technologists who are competent and innovative with excellent problem solving skills.

In line with this, the Seychelles Institute of Technology (SIT) is the country’s “premier professional centre providing high quality technical and vocational education and training in the Engineering, Built Environment and Information & Communication Technology fields” (SIT).

SIT offers Diploma and Advanced Diploma level programmes in fields such as Mechanical Engineering, Communications, Information Technology and Construction. They have a set of passionate, skilful and knowledgeable lecturers as one of the core strengths of the Institute.

As per the institute’s mission to continue to improve its programmes and integrate research and innovation, SIT aims to expand the knowledge and skills of its lecturers through a partnership with India’s Vello Institute of Technology (VIT).

VIT was founded in 1984 and today is one of India’s top technology universities. Situated in the Tamil Nadu state in the southern part of the country, the institute aims to provide quality higher education that is on par with international standards. It offers undergraduate and post-graduate level programmes such as Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in the same fields as those on offer at SIT, including others such as Computer Science and Engineering; Electrical & Electronics Engineering; Civil Engineering and Biotechnology, to name a few.

Following the recommendation from the President’s Office at State House, the Director of SIT, Hubert Barbé, welcomed the founder and Chancellor of Vello Institute of Technology University, Dr G. Viswanathan from India on Friday November 10, 2017 at the Providence campus.

Dr G. Viswanathan’s was accompanied on his visit to SIT by Dr C. Vijayakumar, director for International Relations at VIT. A productive meeting was held with Mr Barbé and other members of the SIT management, including two representatives from the Agency for Human Resource Development (ANHRD).

During the meeting, Dr G. Viswanathan enquired about the needs of SIT and how VIT University can assist and work with the professional centre.

Dr Viswanathan was briefed on the mandate of SIT under the Tertiary Education Act 2011 and on its vision as a Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) professional centre.

It was agreed that SIT could have its lecturers who are degree holders trained to Master’s degree level which would in turn enable the two institutions to work in partnership to offer undergraduate level programmes, which can commence at SIT and be completed at VIT in India. Dr Viswanathan was to further discuss the proposition during his meeting with the President of the Republic on the following Saturday.

Mr Barbe has described the meeting with Dr Viswanathan as a very fruitful one and is looking forward to eventually signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian university to initiate the partnership.
