Primary and secondary schools get recycling bins |25 November 2017

A consignment of bins has been handed over to eight schools on Mahé taking part in the schools waste management project to help with the sorting out of solid waste.

The schools which are part of the pilot project are Anse Royale primary, Beau Vallon primary and secondary, Plaisance secondary, English River secondary, La Retraite primary, Au Cap primary and Anse Boileau secondary.

The official handing over ceremony took place at the Anse Royale primary school on Thursday in the presence of all the sponsors who helped raise over R200,000 to purchase the coloured bins.

Also present were students, parents and education ministry officials.

The bins given to the school are classified in three main categories: recycling/re-using bin, collection by waste redeem centres and going to landfill bin.

Each bin will be used to amass particularly item such as paper, metal, glass, plastic, biodegradable/green waste, pet bottles and beverage cans and other solid waste items.

The remaining amount of the money will be used to construct and install compost tumblers in all eight schools next year.

The head teacher of Anse Royale primary school Sonia Mancienne presented a token to representative of the sponsors which include numerous redeem centres and organisations such as the Seychelles Trading Company (STC), Hunt Deltel, St Louis Redeem Centre & DE Recycling, Savoundravally Chez Deenu Central Reedem Centre, Anse Royale Reedem Centre, Harini & Co Recycler and Geetha Providence Redeem Centre and Environment Trust fund.

Students of the school also read various messages in regards to keeping the environment clean by recycling and going green.

As part of the school’s waste management project the school also embarked on a series of initiatives since the beginning of the year such as sessions to educate all the staff and students of the eight schools chosen for the pilot project which will last for two years.

Following the presentation of the bins, the guests were able to view a recycling exhibition which showcased different objects which can be created from waste items such as plastic bottles.

The exhibition will be open until next week and members of the public are invited to view the hard work of staff and students of the school.

Special advisor to the education minister Alex Souffre thanked all the sponsors for the generous donation and congratulated the Anse Royale primary for being a champion in the eco-schools initiatives.

“This initiative I strongly believe will inculcate in the young learners how to manage waste product at school and at home much better as a mean of protecting our country, our environment so in other words to reduce the level of pollution,” he said.

On behalf of all sponsors, Sashi Senthikumar wished all the schools all the best in the continuation of the implementation of this project.
