Seychelles Labour Union legally certified |12 December 2017

The Seychelles Labour Union (SLU) is now an officially certified trade union.

The certified registration certificate was handed over to SLU’s secretary general, Peter Sinon, by the registrar of trade unions in Seychelles, Bernard Adonis, in a small ceremony yesterday morning at Mr Adonis’ office, OJ Mall.

The certificate was handed over in the presence of other executive members of the trade union.

Now that the SLU has been officially recognised, Mr Sinon called on all its registered members and those wishing to join the union that they can start paying their membership contributions.

“We had not taken any contributions from any of our members earlier because the union was not legal. Now that it is legal, we want to tell everybody that the union is open for business,” he said.

Membership fee is R25 per month or R250 per annum. Registration forms can be found online on www.SLunion.com or can be collected at the union’s office on the first floor at Salamat House.

Launched on October 4 at the Savoy Hotel, Beau Vallon, the SLU will be working for the betterment of working conditions in work places while ensuring and safeguarding the rights of the workers in both government and the private sector. The SLU has former tourism minister Alain St Ange as its president and Herve Antony as vice-president. Christina Savy is the treasurer and the secretary is Marie- France Marie.

There are also nine ordinary members on the committee.

The SLU is the second trade union to register 23 years after the Industrial Relations Act (IRA) came into force in 1994. The Seychelles Federation of Workers Union (SFWU) was the first trade union to register under the IRA 1994.

There are currently two other trade unions -- the Seychelles Transport and General Workers Union (STGWU) and the Teachers, Medical and Other Public Service Employees Union, which falls under the umbrella of the SFWU.
