Seychellois female candidate master Dericka Figaro finished joint-third with Ugandan Candidate Master Christine Namaganda in the 2017 Rwabushenyi Memorial Chess Championship played from November 30 to December 3 at the Forest Cottages, Nagurua Hill, Bukkoto in the outskirts of Kampala, Uganda.

They both finished with 5.5 points.

With a Fédération internationale des échecs (Fide) rating international of 1605, Figaro was 12th overall in the tournament which was an open affair with male and female players playing each other. There were eight games in total between chesslers from Uganda, Kenya, South Sudan and Seychelles.

There was also a tie for the first spot in the women’s category as both Fide masters Goretti Angolikin and Ivy Amoko of Uganda finished with 6 points apiece, but in the end victory went to Angolikin on a tie-break as she won her first Rwabushenyi title.

According to reports, the ladies put up enviable shows to outwit some of the tough guys in the game, with Angolikin who almost put Solomon Lubega to the sword in the penultimate round feasting on Alex Ruzigura and Amoko outsmarting veteran Shadrack Kantiti in the final round.

Ugandan male chesslers took the top three positions: first Fide master Harold Wanyama with 7 points, second Fide master Patrick Kawuma with 7 points and third Allan Mathias Ssonko with 6.5 points.
