Seychelles prepares to defend its report

Seychelles will defend its 5th and 6th combined report on the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child early next year in Geneva, Switzerland. A group of 20 participants representing governmental and non-governmental bodies, providing services to children or directly affiliated with children, are in the process of assisting the Ministry of Family Affairs in this mission to prepare for the event.

This report covers the period from 2008 to 2015. The content of this report reflects the contribution of key stakeholders indicating how the country has performed in undertaking its obligations under the Conventionbased on the recommendations from previous reports.

The report also outlines the challenges to improving the situation of children throughout the country. The combined report was submitted to the UN Committee in June 2016 and participants at the preparation meeting will provide information to update the content of the report including relevant statistics from 2016 to 2017.

Pertinent points being discussed include the current drug situation, incidence of violence in schools, corporal punishment, and the lack of rehabilitation services for children at risk.

The UN Committee on the Convention on the Rights of the Child is made up of experts from different fields coming from various countries. They formulate questions according to their areas of interest. Their sources for question formulation include other reports by international bodies, the media such as the internet and news.

The 2nd, 3rd and 4th combined periodic report was presented and defended in October 2011, in Geneva.

The delegation will be headed by the Minister for Family Affairs, Jeanne Simeon.
