Lorna Lepathy of the electoral commission passes away |27 December 2017

Chief registration officer at the electoral commission, Lorna Lepathy, née Philoé, has passed away.

She was employed as the chief registration officer at the electoral commission ‒ a post she had been holding since April 27, 2015. She also served as the electoral commission’s secretary.

Mrs Lepathy joined the office at the time when the commission was implementing a new voter’s system along with other amendments made to the Elections Act and Political Parties Act.

According to a statement provided by Hendrick Gappy, the commission’s chairman, Mrs Lepathy was immediately exposed to the early presidential elections and the run-off (second round) as well as the National Assembly elections of 2016, while on job training.

To date, she has been deeply involved in the computerisation of voters’ registration system and has taken part in the implementation and execution of the voters census.

Before joining the commission she taught English at various secondary schools and at the Seychelles Institute of Art and Design (SIAD).

Mrs Lepathy’s sudden death occurred on Monday December 25 at the Anse Boileau clinic at 1.30pm, where she was transported by family members after falling gravely sick at her home in Barbarons.

Her sister, Christiana Philoé, stated that Mrs Lepathy had only just returned from a one-week working mission in Mauritius on December 21, following which she started showing signs of being sick.

The Public Health Authority has confirmed that an investigation is currently ongoing surrounding her untimely death.

She has been described by sister, Christiana, as a people’s person who loved to help out in the community.

Additionally, she was a devout Christian and active member of the Chemin Neuf Communauté, a Roman Catholic grouping.

Aged 49, Lorna Lepathy leaves behind her three daughters, husband, three brothers, three sisters and her mother.

Her funeral is expected to take place on December 29 at 2pm at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception.
