Supreme Court’s formal re-opening on January 10 |08 January 2018

‘A Judiciary that we can trust’ is the theme for this year’s ceremonial re-opening of the Supreme Court of Seychelles.

This year, the religious service preceding the ceremonial parade will be held at St. Paul’s Cathedral at 9am on January 10, 2018. It will be hosted by Anglican Archbishop James Wong and the sermon will be delivered by Bishop Denis Wiehe, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Victoria.

As is the custom, during the service, prayers will be offered by representatives of various denominations.

According to a communiqué from the Judiciary, the theme of the ceremony ‒ ‘A Judiciary that we can trust’ ‒ is also “an implicit pledge to the people of Seychelles, that the courts have taken and will continue to take the necessary steps to establish, nurture and foster integrity, transparency and accountability for all court processes and operations thereby forging a positive relationship with the public whose duty it exists to serve”.

“The ability of courts to fulfill their mission and perform their functions is based on the public’s trust and confidence in the system. It is therefore only fitting that blessings and guidance are sought at the beginning of each judicial year,” says the communiqué.

All members of the public are invited to attend the church service.

This year, for the first time, there will be a collection during the service. Proceeds from the collection will be donated to the Association for Parents with Hope.

A ceremonial parade, led by the Police Brass Band will start from St. Paul’s Cathedral, continue up and down Independence Avenue and end at the Victoria Gymnasium Car Park.
