Ministry gears up for start of new school year |16 January 2018

With just a week before the start of the new school year, the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development will host its annual meeting for head teachers and school leaders on Thursday this week.

The meeting, which will take place at the Seychelles Institute of Teacher Education (SITE), is held at the start of each school year to keep the schools’ management up to date on various measures the ministry plans to implement for the upcoming year.

Among the subjects traditionally discussed are staff movements as well as new appointments of school principals and their deputies.

In that respect it is anticipated that the ministry will reveal the school management appointments for the newly constructed Ile Persévérance secondary school.

The school in question will welcome around 900 students at the beginning of the first trimester on Monday, January 22.

Additional information on exactly how many teachers will be transferring from Belonie secondary to either Ile Perseverance or English River secondary schools are also expected to be provided during the session.

These drastic movements come after the ministry decided to demolish one of the oldest blocks at Belonie secondary school last week, resulting into a shift of 113 of its prospective Secondary One (S1) students to English River secondary and another 106 S2 students to Ile Perseverance.

Meanwhile contractors have been urged to speed up their work on the Ile Perseverance secondary building, with officials from the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development and Ministry of Habitat, Infrastructure and Land Transport visiting the site to make sure the institution can open its doors on Monday.

Another item predicted to appear on the discussion list for Thursday are the measures and regulations the ministry plans to undertake in order to curb disciplinary issues in schools.

The ministry has already released its 2018 academic calendars for primary and secondary schools, professional centres and the School of Advanced Level Studies (Sals).
