Peers get training to ‘reach out’ to drug users |17 January 2018

Former drug users and recovering addicts are taking part in a one-week peer educators training programme.

The training, being held at the STC conference room, is being organised by the Agency for Prevention of Drug Abuse and Rehabilitation (APDAR).

The aim of this programme is to have the participants equipped with the knowledge and skills to reach out to drug users in our community and to support the young people in making the right and healthy life decisions.

Also among those following the training are teachers, nurses and cabin crew members.

Secretary of state responsible for the prevention of drug abuse and rehabilitation, Dr Patrick Herminie, said it is clear that friends or peers play a significant role in the psychological development of a teenager or young adult.

“In most instances the young people turn out the way they do as a result of their surrounding influences in the community so we decided to train a group of people who include past drug users and also those qualified in other professions but have experience working with young people. They are being fed with the knowledge needed to reach out to those who are most vulnerable to drugs in the community and encourage them to come forward for treatment,” he said.

He said the peer educators will also support these people lead better and healthier lives.

“For example how to protect themselves from Hepatitis C, HIV/Aids and other diseases. At the end we want a group of people who will be able to tackle the drug users on the grounds within the community to change their mindset and attitude,” he said.
