Junior canoe team back more experienced |24 January 2018

Competing against senior paddlers who have more experience than them in the sport of canoeing, the Seychelles team were ranked fifth out of as many teams in their recent tourney in Reunion.

This was after a disappointing two-point start in their first match on a river in Reunion followed by one-point finishes in the remaining three matches, giving Seychelles a total of five points.

This was also the case for the Entente team comprising players from Reunion and Seychellois. They finished with the same result ‒ a total of five points to claim fourth place.

The winners were Reunion team Aquayak 1 with a grand total of 16 points and they were followed in second and third places by CKCD with 13 points and Aquayak 2 with 10 points.

“I think that the Seychelles team performed well for their first competition, as they did have to adjust to travelling then competing, but I do think that the team can perform well if we just focus on increasing our speed. This was a good first experience and I know they tried hard. The bad weather in Reunion caused a change in the schedule and the kids simply need to increase their ability. However, I do believe they performed well, especially going up against seniors that have experience going around Europe for competitive matches,” said Philip Albert, chairman of the Seychelles Canoe Association.

The Seychelles canoe team received sponsorship from Amusement Centre and the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) to compete in Reunion.

The SCAA sponsored all 12 plane tickets amounting to R103,000 while the Amusement Centre paid for the team’s accommodation. The two companies also printed a unique shirt for the athletes to perform in. The expenses added up to R150,000.
