Letter to the Editor - Unsustainably treating Victoria |26 January 2018

I am an architect and sustainable advocate. I have been visiting Seychelles every year for the past 10 years and have observed how unsustainable we have become in treating our Victoria town.

Instead of introducing policies and initiatives to reduce traffic, government ministers have devised master plans on how to create more roads and roundabouts on which Seychellois have no idea how to navigate responsibly.

In Australia, there has been successful creative alternatives which reduce traffic, which can be implemented in Seychelles. A popular option for reducing urban traffic is:

• Introduce a free Victoria city circular mini bus which can do rounds every 10 minutes. This should be heavily advertised on TV and radio. The bus brightly coloured. The route should focus on primarily running and relieving traffic during business hours. The circular route can run Palm Street, 5th June Avenue, past Jardin des Enfants, Bois de Rose Avenue, Roche Caïman roundabout, Mont Fleuri Road, Francis Rachel Street and Albert Street.

• The free circular bus route can have stops at major tourist attractions and/or business centres such as hospital, tourist promenade, banks, shops and market.

Thank you for the space.
