New trade union registered |26 January 2018

The General Employers’ Trade Union of Seychelles has been registered as a trade union under the section 10 of the Industrial Relations Act 1994.

Its chairperson Ralph Ernesta received the registration certificate yesterday from the registrar Bernard Adonis.

Present during the handover of the certificate were vice-chair Donald Monnaie, executive secretary Tina Hoarau and other members of the trade union.

This non-profitable organisation has 72 members from numerous sectors such as agriculture, construction, cleaning and consultancy.

To be a member of the union, one has to pay R100 registration fee and R100 per month for continuous membership.

It is the fourth union in Seychelles but the second employers union and its office is based on the 1st floor of the Adam Moosa building, Francis Rachel Street.

The union has been accredited by the Citizens Engagement Platform (Ceps) and they hope to be part of boards, to be represented on the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

Mr Ernesta, who also chairs the Federation of Organised Employers Entrepreneurs Contractors Association of Seychelles (FOEECAS), said the aim of the union is to defend the rights of small enterprises and big businesses and contribute to national policies which may affect their business.

“We’ve create this union to unite the employers rather than punish so we want to empower the Seychellois and if they do something wrong we can negotiate on the issues,” he said.

He said they felt it was time to move forward or else they would be left behind while the foreigners take an advantageous role.

“This union is here to help Seychelles move forward by assisting the government in a positive manner and working together with the workers union,” he said.

They will work on the review of the Employment Act, tax on commuting hours.

Employers are being urged to take part in the union’s first meeting to be held on February 2. The venue will be announced at a later date.
