Anse Boileau in election mode

Anse Boileau in election mode

While billboards for two of the three candidates contesting the forthcoming by-election at Anse Boileau are up and the district has moved to election mode, the process is not generating much enthusiasm and excitement among the district’s population.

Independent candidate Ralph Volcère and Phillip Arrisol from the Linyon Demokratik Seselwa (LDS) are the two candidates whose billboards are up while Louis Loizeau from the Seychelles Patriotic Movement (SPM) is yet to put up a billboard for the by-election expected to take place on February 25.

The three men are vying for the Anse Boileau seat in the National Assembly which became vacant when Patrick Pillay, affectionately known as ‘Ton Pat’, resigned as Speaker of the National Assembly and as MNA for Anse Boileau on Monday January 29, 2018.

The leader of the Lalyans Seselwa party, Mr Pillay had won the September 2016 National Assembly election in the Anse Boileau district on the LDS ticket.

Anse Boileau has a voter population of over 3,000 and many eligible voters Seychelles NATION talked to expressed disappointment at the whole situation.

“This is a real farce, while I respect the former MNA’s right to step down. I think it is a waste of resources at a time when the cost of living is still going up. As for me, I have not decided yet if I will go to vote or not,” one housewife said.

“Everybody eligible to vote should exercise their civic duties, it is our district so we need to be represented in the National Assembly whether we like the candidates or not. We were all shocked and were not expecting Ton Pat to go so soon but it is his decision and we have to respect that. Life continues and to have a replacement we need to have an election,” a young professional pointed out.

Other people like a 50-year-old carer from Montagne Posée said for her election or no election nothing will change for her.

“This is politics and I want no part in it,” she said, noting that she is greatly disappointed that Parti Lepep is not taking part but said she understands that the party does not want to be part of this game.
