Around one hundred Seychellois students have benefited from scholarships to study in Cuba in the past years, and currently there are fifteen studying medicine in Cuba.

Such achievement marks the enormous relationship between Cuba and Seychelles.

The Vice-President of the State Council of the Republic of Cuba, Mercedes López Acea, who is on an official visit to Seychelles, met former Seychellois graduates who studied in Cuba to thank them for such successful journey and contributing to their country.

The small ceremony was held at the Savoy Resort & Spa in the presence of Vice-President Vincent Meriton, the secretary of state in the department of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Barry Faure, and Cubans working in Seychelles among other guests.

Welcoming the former students, VP Acea pointed out through her interpreter that Seychelles has accomplished a lot during the years, and that Cuba was able to deliver professional hard working students to contribute towards the economy.

“We Cubans feel very proud when we meet students who have graduated from Cuba and are now playing a key role in the economy of Seychelles. Cuba and Seychelles have so many reasons to feel proud; we have such enormous connection, which enable us to realise our goals,” she said.

VP Meriton added that Seychelles has got many talented former students who have graduated from Cuba over the past years.

“Seychelles has been able to accomplish its vision to provide quality education in different fields. The former students have mastered the art to succeed with determination along the way, and are currently contributing towards the economy of Seychelles.  Many Seychellois have graduated from Cuba and are currently employed in Seychelles, delivering an excellent service towards the community,” he said.

A former graduate who studied in Cuba, Honorable Simon Gill, stated that more students should have the opportunity to study in Cuba and along the way to serve their country.

VP Acea’s visit is aimed at reinforcing the historical and fraternal ties and solidarity between Cuba and Seychelles.
