FTC to boost collaboration with police |17 February 2018

The chief executive of the Fair Trading Commission (FTC) met senior police representatives earlier this week in a bid to reinforce the collaboration between the commission and the police.

It was agreed that the police will assist the commission in the following areas:

  • To locate respondents who are difficult to locate or being purposely evasive to issue/serve summons;
  • Timely action in non-compliance cases (non-compliance to Board of Commissioners’ orders, undertakings, summons etc…);
  • Assistance during market monitoring and surveillance activities when there are attempts to threaten officers or impede their investigations;
  • Regular meeting to update/reinforce collaboration;
  • Jointly develop enforcement capacity of the police force and the commission through joint training.

It is expected that the reinforced collaboration will lead to enhanced enforcement of the laws under FTC’s jurisdiction.

The commission and the police force are sending a strong message to the recurrent offenders who continuously make themselves difficult to locate, breach summons, breach B.O.C ruling, obstruct inspection/investigation processes that strong actions will be taken within the parameters of the law to ensure compliance.
