Seychelles seeks China’s help in community projects on Praslin |17 February 2018

Seychelles is hoping to enlist China’s help in several community projects for Praslin.

Delegations from both sides recently visited the sites so as to have a clearer picture of what the projects entail.

The delegation from Seychelles side was led by the Minister for Youth, Sports and Culture, Mitcy Larue. She was accompanied by the chief executive of the National Arts Council Jimmy Savy, chief executive of the Seychelles National Youth Council Alvin Laurence, special advisor for Sports Jean Larue, special advisor for Youth Kevin Vidot, member of the National Assembly for Baie Ste Anne Churchill Gill, and the district’s administrator, Dennis Antat.

Led by Ambassador Yu Jinsong, the Chinese delegation comprised the embassy’s chief of political section Donald Tang and attaché of political affairs of the Chinese embassy Zhou Xi.

The visit was aimed at identifying potential areas where the Chinese embassy can provide support and assistance towards community development projects which shall be for the benefit of the island.

The projects were chosen after the minister’s familiarisation visit last year when she took over this new portfolio.

The Baie Ste Anne’s children’s playground kicked off the visit. The site, which has been in existence for over 20 years, requires much repair work and replacement of equipment.

At Marie Jeanne Estate’s volleyball and basketball court, proposals were made for the re-surfacing of the court from the current tarmac and the possibility to include toilet and changing room facilities next to the court.

Finally, the delegation visited the Anse Boudin community centre which was originally the site for the Anse Boudin school in the 1950s. After being used for various purposes such as day care centre, community centre and multipurpose hall, the building now lays abandoned. The ministry proposed the transformation of this site into a recreational centre with various facilities that can be used for camps and cultural activities.

“Today we have visited several sites in order to show the Chinese ambassador certain community projects which are potential areas for cooperation.  So far we have not agreed on anything but we shall discuss further in upcoming meetings,” Minister Larue shared.

The delegation also visited the Vijay swimming pool.

The accompanying photographs show the delegations during their visit to the various sites.
