Seychelles to co-host major conference on how to finance sustainable Blue economy projects |22 February 2018

The government of Seychelles in collaboration with the World Bank will be organising a conference entitled ‘Financing Sustainable and Climate Resilient Ocean Economies in Africa’.

The two-day conference opens tomorrow and will take place at the Savoy Resort, Beau Vallon.

The conference is a follow up to an African Ministerial Conference on Ocean Economies and Climate Change that was organised in the Republic of Mauritius in September 2016.

The main objective of the conference is to advance the agenda of maximising finance for development in the Blue economy, by optimising the use of scarce public resources and crowding in private investment.

More specifically, the conference will aim to enhance knowledge and highlight innovative solutions on how Africa can maximise finance to support sustainable Blue economy initiatives in select sub-sectors including fisheries, aquaculture, waste management, marine and spatial planning, coastal resilience, tourism, energy and transport.

The conference will bring together representatives from various African countries, development partners, international organisations, private investors, scientists, civil society and academia to share expertise, discuss lessons learned, and engage in pragmatic discussions focused on financial solutions to build the resilience of ocean economies to climate change.

The conference will open in the presence of President Danny Faure, Vice-President Vincent Meriton and other high officials, some of whom will also be involved in the deliberations.

The World Bank Group will be represented by Laura Tuck, the Vice-President for Sustainable Development; Mark Lundell, the Country Director; Karin Kemper, Senior Director for Environment and Natural Resources and other World Bank officials.

Various Seychellois experts will speak at the conference.
