Seychelles Young Leaders Programme |23 February 2018

Prospective graduates showcase their project

A group of four prospective graduates of the 5th cohort of the Seychelles Young Leaders Programme presented their ongoing project to the Institute of Early Childhood Development.

The project titled ‘Moral Development in Early Childhood’ aims to build spirituality and good values among the population by inculcating these elements in children while they are still quite young.

Barbara Servina, Stephanie Joubert, Solange Robert and Kerina Michel were the four students of the Seychelles Young Leaders Programme (SYLP) who came up with the initiative.

Their idea was inspired by their overseas internship in Jakarta, Indonesia where they had the opportunity to observe how daycares and child-minders instill positive values in children.

These are often done through songs, poems and frequent interaction with community and spiritual leaders. Parents in Indonesia are also encouraged to join in these activities.

With their project, the SYLP students want to implement similar habits within local daycare, child-minding premises and crèches for children aged between 0-7 years.

“This is why we chose to bring this project to the attention of the senior officials at the IECD first; they are the ones who are educational experts with children in this age range,” Solange Robert, one of the students, stated.

Although the project is in its initial phase, the quartet wants to present it to the Ministry of Education, the Seychelles Inter Faith Council (Sifco) and other relevant stakeholders.

Meanwhile their presentation at IECD was well received by chief executive Shirley Choppy who described it as a great initiative to revive ‘la bonne manière’ in our youths and has invited the group to several of IECD’s upcoming workshops.
