Letter to the Editor - A lesson in efficiency |27 February 2018

Get a passport in a day, work permit in a week. The Department of Immigration has been working super efficiently and is an example of the government getting its processes right. It restores people's confidence in the system and kudos to Mr Paul Didon and his 100% Seychellois team for setting the bar high.

If all government departments worked as efficiently, Seychelles would be much higher on the ease of doing business scale. However that is not the case.

In the same building, the Registrar of Companies continues to work at a snail pace to process documents, i.e. if they don't lose it first. Next door, the Central Bank struggles to control depreciation of SCR while just across the road, the Ministry of Finance finds new ways to make it depreciate further with the progressive income tax.

In their latest debacle, the Ministry of Finance has introduced a mandatory payroll template so lengthy that it will break the Guinness Book of world records for the longest payroll in the world with its 37 columns, weighing businesses down with more administrative work.

Perhaps they should all take a lesson in efficiency and facilitating businesses from the Department of Immigration, who has proven that it can be done in Seychelles.
