Sea Cucumber Divers and Seychelles Labour Union agree on cooperation |07 March 2018

The Seychelles Sea Cucumber Harvesting Association and the Seychelles Labour Union (SLU) have reached an agreement of cooperation between the two parties.

The agreement was reached following a meeting by the association's chairman Albert Quatre and his executive committee member Dominique Thelermont with Alain St Ange, President of the SLU and his secretary general Peter Sinon.

The sea cucumber fishermen and the skippers of their boats used the opportunity of the meeting with the SLU leaders to explain in detail their work and the challenges they face at sea and when they undertake deep sea dive.

The association was thankful for the recent fuel subsidy approved by President Danny Faure, but they explained that their work is based on a quota system, that it remains somewhat seasonal among many other points that directly affect their earning and lives.

More meetings are being planned between the SLU officials and the fishermen and skippers who have rallied in large numbers in the Sea Cucumber Harvesting Association to agree on a way forward.

Chairman Quatre, a skipper by profession, thanked the SLU for accepting to meet with them and said he was happy to see that their challenges have been understood.

Mr St Ange said on his part that challenges faced by workers in Seychelles needed to be heard.

“We stand with the workers and will do all we can to get their difficulties raised in a bid to find the best solution for a consolidated way forward,” Mr St Ange added.
