Police to investigate leaked information on Assumption deal |09 March 2018

Vice-President Vincent Meriton has asked the police to carry out a formal investigation after leaked classified documents on the proposed Assumption military facility have appeared on the social media.

According to Vice-President Meriton both signed documents of the 2015 and 2018 agreements, their covering letters and some project plans have appeared on social media.

“We have to stop this. Whoever has done this has acted in breach of the oath of secrecy they have signed while being in government employment and this is in breach of the Constitution and work ethics,” Vice-President Meriton said.

He explained that if we don’t do it now, everybody would believe that under the guise of democracy and free access to information, everybody can publish anything and any official document like this one which has appeared on a public domain.

Vice-President Meriton described the act as very serious and said the leak on the social media has come as a shock and that clearly shows that some people are working without principles.

“Whoever has done this will face the consequences of their action,” Vice- President Meriton said, adding that people should follow rules and regulations.

Vice-President Meriton said that the government will continue to give as much information on the revised document signed in January this year, through the various public meetings being held in the districts.

He urged members of the public to attend those meetings in a civilised manner and to refrain from xenophobia.
