Agriculture and fisheries expert Finley Racombo passes away |10 March 2018

Seychelles has lost a dedicated and respected professional who had devoted most of his life to the development of natural resources in the country. Finley Racombo passed away yesterday, only four days after he celebrated his 63rd birthday.

In a communiqué released by State House, President Danny Faure has described Mr Racombo as a “dedicated and respected professional who had devoted most of his life to the development of natural resources in Seychelles”.

“He had also contributed immensely to the civic and political life of his country,” added President Faure.

The president also noted that “his passing away was a great loss to Seychelles” and he has extended his deepest condolences to Mr Racombo's family.

Mr Racombo retired from the public service on March 5, 2018 after 45 years of devoted service.

He had specialised in agriculture and fisheries, and had served in a number of chief executive positions in this sector. He was principal secretary for agriculture and marine resources from 1995 to 2012, chief executive of the Seychelles Fishing Authority from 2012 to 2015, special adviser to the minister of agriculture and fisheries, and chief executive of the Seychelles Agricultural Agency from November 2016 until his official retirement on March 5, 2018.

Mr Racombo started work in the department of agriculture in 1972. Following his Master’s degree training in Cuba, he was appointed director of crop development in 1989. In 1994 he was promoted to director general, before becoming the principal secretary for agriculture and marine resources in March 1995.

Former agriculture principal secretary Walter Talma wrote on Facebook: “I had the pleasure learning along your side at university, had the great opportunity working with you and others to see agriculture move forward providing the leadership and guidance. Finley we may have at times not seen eye to eye on things but (you are) definitely a great person and friend. Rest in peace my friend”.

Mr Racombo was also the chairman of the Seychelles Football Federation (SFF) from 1991 to 1994.

He also served on the disciplinary committee of the SFF and was an honorary member.

Mr Racombo is survived by his four children Kenneth, Tessa, Shannon and Aisha and partner Inese Sinon.
