Ambulance drivers protest over salaries |23 March 2018

A group of ambulance drivers and porters at Seychelles Hospital yesterday staged a protest over the fact that the Ministry of Health had not yet looked into a revision of their salaries.

The ambulance drivers and porters decided not to work and refused to perform their duties.

The management of the Ministry of Health convened an emergency meeting to solve the issue after having judged the action as very serious.

Talking to Seychelles NATION after the meeting, a representative for the ambulance drivers and porters, Michael Fred, stated that they had given the Ministry of Health two weeks to come up with a solution to pay the salary differences owed to them since January.

“The protest was a way to find more information concerning our money, which we have worked tirelessly for since January as we were promised that they will back-pay us for all the extra work we have done,” he said.

Mr Fred added that they had not received nor heard anything from the Ministry of Health and they felt that it was time to voice their grievances as they were tired of promises,” he said.

The secretary general of the Seychelles Federation of Workers’ Unions (SFWU) Antoine Robinson was present at the scene to assist the workers.

His role was to give support to the workers and also try to calm them down though they were expressing  that their rights had been violated thus creating unnecessary frustration.

“Such a protest can be considered as a serious problem, as none of the drivers or porters were working. Who would have been responsible if there was an emergency case,” Mr Robinson said.

The health workers also complained about poor working conditions and stated that the ambulances were not up to the required emergency standards.

The Ministry of Health did not make any comment about the incident yesterday.
