HR managers meet to discuss labour issues |23 March 2018

Human resource managers from parastatals and the different industries in the private sector, mainly tourism, met for their first yearly quarterly forum to discuss and share knowledge on employment issues, policies and legislations.

Organised by the Ministry of Employment, Immigration and Civil Status, the half- day forum took place yesterday morning at Independence House Annex conference room.

The forum which was chaired by the employment principal secretary, Jules Baker, also provided a platform for the HR managers to seek consultation on new policy decisions to be undertaken and to make any queries or suggestions they feel is a challenge for them in the labour market.

Participants went over the minutes of their last meeting held in November 2017 and the agenda included reports and presentations on the status of the employment bill to be brought before the National Assembly soon, the results of a consultancy on the importance of creating a safety culture in the workplace and training of the Seychelles Tourism Academy students who are regarded as pillars of Seychelles economy.

During the forum, the HR managers had the opportunity to participate in two presentations -- one on fix term contracts presented by Alda Aumeeruddy, the director for Industrial Relations of the ministry, and the other on the roles and functions of the Seychelles Federation of Workers Union (SFWU) by Antoine Robinson, secretary general of the federation.

They also participated in open discussions on the new PIT Regulations, feedback on the revised Employment Act, changes in the employment and labour laws as announced in the President’s State-of-the-nation address and on the employment localisation plan.

Such a forum is held every year on a quarterly basis and other HR managers interested to take part can contact the ministry on 4297200 for further information.
