Donation of computers to boost learning process at Glacis school |24 March 2018

To mark its third anniversary today, the new Glacis primary school yesterday launched an ICT project for its teaching staff.

The aim is for the teachers to use computers as a tool to improve their teaching methods and as a result will bring about an improvement in the pupils learning process.

To support the project, the school received a donation of 10 computers and financial assistance from four business owners in the Glacis community.

The handover of the donation took place yesterday during a small ceremony held at the school in the presence of teachers, parents and students.

The school’s head teacher, Vivienne Preira, accepted the eight Dell computers from Ahmed Didi, the general manager of Pure FM, and two LENOVO computers from Vijay Vairasmy, the director of Vimal Company and a cheque for R1500 from Selvi Sekaar and wife of Shanu Supermarket.

An anonymous sponsor has also sponsored six months allowance for the training facilitator to train the teachers on how to use the computers.

The sponsors present said that they will continue to assist the school in any other way.

The first computer lesson will start in April with two classes per week. The teachers will be divided into groups according to their knowledge of using a  computer, starting with those with the basic, then intermediate and advanced.

Computer training classes will be run at the school until December.

Prior to the donation, the ICT room had only four computers.

The project entitled ‘Enhancing the ICT skills and knowledge of the teaching staff’ is an initiative of the chairman of the school council, Marie-André Morel who is a former teacher.

Mrs Morel said that to mark the school’s anniversary each year, the school council undertakes a small project aimed at supporting and improving the school development.

Last year, signs were put on the school’s building so that staff, pupils and visitors can easily find their way around.

Following an audit on the school’s needs carried out this year, results showed that there was a lack of ICT skills and knowledge among the teaching staff, more specifically in computer literacy, which was seen as an area that needed urgent attention.

Mrs Morel thanked the sponsors for their generous donations saying it will bring positive changes in the teachers’ lives, thus improving the learning outcome at the school.

“Dear teachers, in this modern world where everything revolves around computer technology, you cannot be left behind. You have to move forward and I urge all of you to make the most of this opportunity,” Mrs Morel said.

The sponsors were presented with a token of appreciation by the students.
