Taxi Association meet members on Praslin and La Digue and hold second meeting with ministers

The Seychelles Taxi Association chairman and executive committee members were on Praslin and La Digue recently to meet taxi operators prior to their second meeting with government ministers.

Jemmie Bonne, the chairman of the association, was accompanied by a six-person delegation and Alain St Ange, the president of the Seychelles Labour Union (SLU) and Herve Anthony met the taxi operators on La Digue on Friday last week before a follow up meeting at the Grand Anse Praslin district administration with Praslin taxi operators.

On both islands the taxi operators raised issues relating to the business environment and respect for their operation.

Apart from La Digue where issues were more focused on the environment of the island, the Praslin and Mahé taxi operators were facing similar challenges which the association agreed to follow up.

On Monday this week, the association met ministers Charles Bastienne (responsible for land transport) and Maurice Loustau-Lalanne (responsible for tourism) and their principal secretaries, representatives of the Seychelles Licencing Authority (SLA), Ministry of Finance, Road Commissioner among others. The taxi association was represented by a large delegation that this time included operators from Praslin and La Digue and the SLU.

They also discussed matters raised a month ago following their petition letter addressed to President Danny Faure.

A committee between the public sector and the taxis has now been set up to analyse and make recommendations on a number of matters affecting taxi operations in Seychelles.
Taxi bays were discussed, new taxi fares and for the association to be consulted on issues of new licenses.

The Air Seychelles CarTrawler deal was raised as well as hotels operating a parallel transfer service to airport and Victoria among a number of other points. Taxi covered area at Baie Ste Anne jetty for passengers to board taxis as well as one in the Victoria Taxi Stand were also tabled as well as an increase of three more taxis for La Digue.

The taxi operators were satisfied with the meeting and said they are hopeful that at the next meeting planned for May many of the matters raised will start to be resolved.
