LDS votes out motions to approve nomination of new ministers |18 April 2018

The LDS members in the National Assembly yesterday voted out the three motions moved by the leader of government business Charles De Commarmond last Wednesday in accordance with Article 69(2) of the Constitution.

The Assembly sitting last Wednesday was adjourned early pending a decision by Speaker Nicholas Prea after the mover of the motion and all members of his party stormed out of the Assembly.

The walk-out came after the leader of the opposition Wavel Ramkalawan had said the LDS would not approve the three nominees, that its decision was final and there was no need to question the nominees.

Mr De Commarmond argued that this was not fair because it was the Assembly which approved the questioning of any new nominees for key positions.

Yesterday morning at the start of the session Speaker Prea ruled that the fact that he walked out of the House, the leader of government business forfeited his right of reply and that there would be no more debate on the issue.

The next step was a motion by LDS member Jean-François Ferrari under Order 23 of the Assembly Standing Orders asking that the Assembly put the question on vote to close the debate on the three motions.

The motion was approved by LDS members following which they proceeded to vote against the three nominations.
