Rotaract Club attends Youth Leadership Award in Mauritius |20 April 2018

The Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) for the District 9220 for the year 2017 – 2018 was held in Mauritius from April 11 – 15, 2018.

This year’s RYLA gathered the Rotaract and Interact clubs of the district 9220 and other participants from Seychelles, Mauritius, Rodrigues, Madagascar, Reunion, Comoros and Djibouti.

Those who attended benefited from presentations and keynote speeches from Rotarians and organisations providing services within the islands in the Indian Ocean.

The participants learned how to provide service within their respective organisation with a high level of professionalism acquired through their respective educational and professional experience.

They were also provided with the knowledge and tools on the various competencies required to provide service to the community as well as how to sustain a high level of delivery and service.

Participants also learned how to solve problems ethically through the Rotary international principles.

The five-day long programme was facilitated by representatives from Éclats de L’île, a non-governmental organisation based in Reunion that delivers laughter and joy to hospitalised children, their families as well as the medical staff through clown performances.

Throughout the workshop, participants learned how laughter can help appease the pain of children and also worked in groups to capture the essence of the service provided by Éclats de L’île.

The meeting was also facilitated by Eric Cathan, a professional Mauritian guitarist from Australia who educated participants on music therapy as a unique method to help disabled children.

Furthermore, participants had the opportunity to take part in several events to promote fellowship and friendship such as cultural exchange night and tropical night.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an intensive leadership experience organised by Rotary clubs and districts where participants develop leadership and networking skills while having fun.

It connects young leaders in communities around the world to benefit through team-building, problem-solving and learn from community leaders through inspirational talks.

Additionally, the programme is geared towards unlocking the potential of participants to turn motivation into action.

The next RYLA will be hosted by Madagascar on April 24, 2019 and is open to youths aged 12-30 years.

Seychelles was represented at this year’s RYLA by the Rotaract Club of Mahé. The delegation was made up of Christian Ng Ping Cheun (Club President), Adolf Nourrice (Club President Elect), Brigitte Gbilimou, Dane de Commarmond, Joanna Pouponneau and Berguitta Souris.
