Incidents at Montagne Posée prison raise concerns over safety |25 April 2018

The Seychelles Prison Service, through its Twitter account, has revealed two consecutive incidents that are fueling the public’s concerns on the safety of prisoners at the Montagne Posée prison.

According to the Seychelles Prison Service, the first security incident occurred on Monday April 23 at approximately 9pm between three inmates. The row was reportedly caused by the theft of personal belongings.

The fight resulted in inmates suffering minor injuries which received medical treatment, the Twitter post continues. The matter is currently under investigation.

The second incident took place yesterday, April 24, at 11am where an inmate was observed attempting self harm.

The post states that the inmate was intercepted and, though no injuries were sustained, the prison service alerted medical authorities and the inmate was brought in for counseling. Accompanying this post was a picture of a rope.

Also published on the twitter account yesterday were around a dozen weapons, hand-made and otherwise, that were found on inmates while trying to enter or exit the prison’s main male block.

These reports have had many concerned citizens taking to social media to question the level of safety and security in the prison especially following the death of Keven Bristol last week on April 15.
