SIAD has sewing capacity for AVANI staff uniforms |28 April 2018

The Seychelles Institute of Arts and Design has confirmed that it is set to tailor uniforms for employees of AVANI Barbarons Resort & Spa as the institution is equipped with some 50 industrial and domestic sewing machines.

The contracted designs for the different departments done by students of the Seychelles Institute of Arts and Design (SIAD) were successfully accepted by the management of AVANI Barbarons Resort & Spa.

People may have been wondering if the institution would be capable of sewing uniforms for such a big establishment but SIAD director Christine Payet has said the institution has the capacity to do the work as there are logistics in place to cater for the contract work.

Mrs Payet said they have an agreement with the hotel to provide the uniforms in stages which makes things easier for them as they would not have been able to deliver all in one go.

She explained that apart from the normal working hours, work on the uniforms will also be done within the institution’s free time, after working hours and during weekends. Under the guidance of the staff, the uniforms will be sewn by a group of 15 second and final year students. There is also the possibility of acquiring the services of the institution’s part timers for the job.

“We are ready for the challenge as this will serve as a training and working experience for the students who will get an idea of how to go about things in an industry,” she added.

According to Mrs Payet, the hotel will have to cater for the staff salaries on off working hours, electricity and spares for the sewing machines, among other incentives yet to be discussed.

This is the first time SIAD gets involved in a big project for the designing and sewing for a large establishment.
