Seychelles Tourist Guide Association gets legal status |19 May 2018

The Seychelles Tourist Guide Association (STGA) now has the authority and mandate to operate legally as established by the laws of Seychelles.

This comes after it received its Certificate of Registration from the Department of Legal Affairs in Victoria on Monday, May 14, 2018.

According to figures from the Seychelles Licensing Authority in February 2018, Seychelles currently has around one hundred (100) individuals operating licensed Tourist Guide business.

Around 75 operators are from Mahé, 20 from Praslin and five from La Digue. The numbers are bound to increase.

During the last decade, numerous attempts were made to set up an association to cater for the welfare of individuals operating tourist guide business in Seychelles. Important developments only happened during the first quarter of year 2018, when veteran Tourist Guide, Cyril Payette, and a few of his colleagues, secured valuable assistance from various associates, including continued encouragement and support from the local Ministry of Tourism. This brought about the election of the first formal executive committee in March 2018.

The composition of the elected executive committee is as follows:

Chairperson: Barney Adeline

Vice-Chairperson: Ian Pillay

Secretary: Geralda Payet

Treasurer: Stevens Duval

Member: Guy Didon

Moving forward, the executive committee members worked relentlessly and tirelessly during the past eight weeks to achieve the required legal status for the association.

Above all else now, the executive committee is obligated to hold a general meeting in the immediate future, for all the Praslin and La Digue licensed tourist guides, so they may elect their respective representatives, who will automatically join the existing management team.

One of the association’s main objectives is to promote and protect the legitimate interest of all members engaged in the local tourist guide business, with the expectation that a typical tourist guide model for Seychelles will develop, bringing local tourist guide business to the next level.
