Four groups of police officers have successfully completed a month’s supervisory course at the Seychelles Police Academy.

They were presented with their certificates in a ceremony held last Friday in the presence of Home Affairs and Designated Minister Macsuzy Mondon, the Commissioner of Police Kishnan Labonte, senior officers and staff of the Seychelles Police Academy (SPA).

The supervisory course allowed the police officers to enhance their knowledge on managing people, resources and information, parade inspection and police procedures as well as management and leadership.

Speaking to the newly graduated police officers, Chief Superintendent Robert Bibi stated that police officers play a crucial role in the force and are categorised as the frontline managers.

Superintendent Bibi also honoured the memory of the late Corporal Joseph Fred who was in the first cohort following the supervisory course.

“I have witnessed a surge of interest in law enforcement by young graduates and young officers both male and female in law enforcement. We believe that true leaders understand that leadership is not about them but about those they serve, it is not about exalting themselves but about lifting others up,” he said.

He added he is confident that the supervisory course was a good investment for the SPA.

“As supervisory officers you are the agent of change, so go out there and apply what you have absorbed throughout your training with determination and conviction so as to attain the Seychelles Police mission. Regional and station commanders I urge you to embrace changes and encourage the trained police officers to implement what they have acquired during their training at the academy,” Superintendent Bibi said.

He ended his speech by stating that SPA needs to do more to fulfill its mandate as the main law enforcement training institution in the country.

“We have submitted our strategic plan for the next five years and we are committed to meeting all our goals in terms of training effective, efficient, intelligent and corrupt-free police officers,” he said.

During the certificate presentation ceremony, officers who have excelled in the course were also rewarded for their achievements.

The best performers were Corporal Karen Faure, Corporal Rudy Michel, Sergeant Maggie Dubel and Sub Inspector Timothy Hoareau.

Awards were also presented to officers who have excelled in their line of duty.

Assistant Superintendent Andre Joseph was rewarded for detecting a mobile theft case onboard an Air Seychelles flight from Mauritius on March 16, 2018; Police Constable Keith Monchouguy was rewarded while monitoring CCTV and observed a man behaving suspiciously at Castor Road. PC Monchouguy kept his monitoring and saw the man trying to sell a mobile phone. The 21-year-old man was arrested and prosecuted for unlawful possession of property.

Other officers were also rewarded during the certificate presentation ceremony.
