Keeping our beaches safe

Swimming safety signboards aimed at warning both visitors and locals on the dangers of strong underwater currents are being placed on several beaches on Mahé.

The signboards carry warning messages in English, French and Italian.

There will be around 18 swimming safety signs which will be allocated in different areas on Mahé such as Anse Royale, Grande Anse, Takamaka, Baie Lazare among others,  beaches  that are considered popular spots for picnics, sunbathing and swimming by locals and visitors alike.

The Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) has sponsored R100,000 towards this project under its corporate social responsibility, a gesture that will serve the community and save lives.

SCAA’s corporate communications manager Lina Laurence and the public relations officer Jean Hassan and Captain Marc Hoareau of the SMSA symbolically  placed two of these swimming safety signboards at Grand Anse Mahé beach yesterday afternoon.

SCAA’s station and sea rescue operations manager, Paul Antoine, stated that SCAA is concerned about incidents happening at sea especially when human lives are being threatened.

“Every year, we assist people in difficulties at sea and we work with great efforts to prevent such incidents from happening.  We partnered with SMSA and RCSS to realise such a project which will benefit both locals and foreigners. They should take notice of the swimming safety signboards before going out to sea to swim,” he said.

Captain Hoareau added that people need to start taking their responsibilities while going to swim.

“Each individual should think twice before going into rough seas, and the swimming signboards will alert them on the dangers that may happen if they do so,” he said.
