STB chief welcomes news that Air Seychelles will soon fly six times a week to Jo’burg |26 May 2018

The chief executive of the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB) Sherin Francis has welcomed as good news that Air Seychelles will be increasing its frequency from five to six weekly flights to Johannesburg.

The new service will start on July 3, 2018, and is being introduced to meet strong travel demand on the Johannesburg route, and increasing number of guests visiting Seychelles.

South Africa is an important tourism market for Seychelles and the island’s main market on the African continent.

The total number of visitors for 2017 was 14,215, which represented a 15% increase over 2016 when 12,354 visitors were recorded.

To date 4,388 South African visitors have come to Seychelles, and this is 17 percent less than the figures recorded for the same period last year.

In spite of challenges, STB is aiming to maintain the performance achieved in 2017 and hopes to attain at least an 8 percent growth over the 2017 figures.

“We are hoping that this will translate into more visitors from South Africa as at current the demand exceeds the availability of direct flights and seats available for South African visitors choosing to holiday in the Seychelles, and hopefully this might also drive down the price of air tickets on that route,” said Mrs Francis.

Remco Althuis, chief executive of Air Seychelles, said: “The new service, which will be operated by Airbus A320 aircraft, will provide an additional 252 seats per week between South Africa and our beautiful islands.  In addition, guests looking to travel via Seychelles to Mumbai will be provided a seamless connectivity of less than 2 hours via Seychelles.

Air Seychelles currently operates five weekly flights between Seychelles and Johannesburg on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The sixth weekly flight will be on Tuesdays.
