Lions Club leads major tree-planting project |28 May 2018

The Lions Club of Seychelles has embarked on an ambitious tree-planting project which aims to counteract the negative impact of climate change.

To kick-start this initiative, the Lions Club organised a tree-planting activity on Saturday in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change and the Seychelles National Parks Authority (SNPA).

Lions Club members and employees from SNPA gathered together under the hot Saturday morning sun to plant around 400 ‘latanye’ trees at a clearing located in Bel Air near the Montessori pre-school.

The president of the Lions Club, Dr Sasikumar Subramanian, stated that tree planting is a noble activity because the cutting of trees for our human consumption is one of the causes of global warming and the increase in ocean level.

“We are cutting down more trees than we are planting,” Dr Subramanian highlighted.

“Because of this the United Nations is urging all countries to plant as many trees as possible and the Lions Club International also utters the same.”

Dr Subramanian added that the tree-planting initiative has been added to the Lions Club calendar of activities and therefore other districts will be involved in the future.

Jason Jacqueline, the director for forestry and terrestrial parks at the SNPA, explained that tree-planting activities form part of the authority’s fight against invasive creepers, known locally as lalyann anvaisan.

It is to be noted that the area identified in Bel Air for the tree planting had recently been cleared of these invasive creepers.

SNPA reinforced its war on the invasive creepers late last year after it launched a series of training sessions for local contractors on effective methods of eradicating the creepers.
