Lions Club screens 1967 people to date to detect kidney problems |12 June 2018

A total of 1967 people have been screened by the Lions Club of Seychelles to detect kidney problems.

The eighth session was conducted on June 2 at Beoliere where 107 people were screened. Out of this number, 18 people need attention.

Residents from Anse Boileau ,Grand Anse Mahé, Port Glaud, La Misère, Anse Louis, Port Launay and Anse à la Mouche attended the screening session.

A Lions Club spokesperson said that the kidney screening exercise was satisfactory but could have been higher if more effort could have been taken by everyone in the districts.

Preliminary findings saw about 18 people needing attention for kidney, hypertension and blood pressure treatment.

The exercise, organised by the Lions of Seychelles (comprising the Lions Club, Melvin Jones Foundation and Centennial Womens Club), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Airtel, was targeting people of 40 years of age and over.

The screening session diagnosed diabetes, hypertension, obesity and kidney disease.

Another important dimension taken at the eighth screening session was the introduction of HIV tests.

About 90 people underwent rapid HIV screening tests along with other tests linked with HIV,  an exercise that was welcomed by the National Aids Council.

The negative results for the HIV testing made most of the people happy to know that they are HIV-free and that their health was good.

These free kidney screening sessions have so far been held in Victoria, Anse Royale, Anse Etoile, La Digue, Praslin, Beau Vallon, Les Mamelles and Anse aux Pins districts.
