10 FACTS ABOUT OUR CONSTITUTION |16 June 2018

  1. Our Constitution, adopted by the Constitutional Assembly in 1993 is the first democratic one in our country’s history.

 

  1. Our Constitution came into effect on the June 21, 1993 after approval on the June 18, 1993 by 73.9% of voters in a national referendum.

 

  1. Our Constitution is the supreme law of our country and any law inconsistent with it is void.

 

  1. Our Constitution contains 16 chapters, 7 schedules and 170 articles.

 

  1. Our Constitution provides for three national languages: Creole, English and French.

 

  1. Our Constitution provides for three pillars of governments: the Executive, the Legislature and the Judiciary which operate checks and balances on each other.

 

  1. Our Constitution provides for constitutional bodies with specific obligations and duties in respect of the support, oversight and defence of the state and its citizens.

 

  1. Our Constitution is referred to as “speaking from time to time, that is, it is a “living document” (as the country changes and developments occur, the Constitution must be able to adapt).

 

  1. The Constitution provides for 25 fundamental rights of every person in Seychelles.

 

  1. The Constitution indicates that is the responsibility of every Seychellois citizen to uphold and defend the Constitution, to foster national unity, to protect the environment and to strive towards the aspirations of the Preamble.
