Ceps chairperson Jude Fred's message to mark Constitution Day |19 June 2018

'It is our fundamental duty to uphold and defend this Constitution’

Yesterday, June 18, Seychellois celebrated Constitution Day and this year marks the 25th anniversary of the birth of the Third Republic, the day the Constitution was approved by the people in a referendum.

On this occasion, Citizens Engagement Platform Seychelles (Ceps) chairperson Jude Fred has sent out a message to every citizen, reminding them of their duty to uphold and defend this Constitution and the law.

Mr Fred's message reads:

"Ceps wishes all citizens a happy Constitution Day 2018.

“Ceps makes reference to Article 40 of the Constitution and reminds all citizens that ‘It shall be our fundamental duty to uphold and defend this Constitution and the law’.

“On behalf of the civil society, Ceps is proud to congratulate all civil society organisations for their meaningful contribution in the development of Seychelles over the 25 years.

“Indeed, the Constitution has been our guiding instrument as it makes provision for citizen’s participation and engagement.

“Article 23 gives us the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association and I am proud of that today.

“Ceps has a membership of over 100 civil society organisations which have put this right into practice and have made enormous contributions in our community.

“Additionally, Article 24 allows every citizen at the age of 18 years to participate in government and without doubt citizens have really exercised this right in many ways.

“Fellow citizens as we celebrate our Constitution let us make it our duty to learn more about our Constitution so that we can continue engaging in public affairs.

“Finally but most importantly, let us continuously thank Almighty God who has blessed us with the most beautiful country in the world, evoking the blessings of the Almighty God let Him remain at the centre of our country.

“Seychelles my blessed country.
