Sports and educational activities to celebrate Olympic Day |21 June 2018

To commemorate this year’s Olympic Day which falls on June 23, a series of activities have been programmed for school children today at 9am at the Roche Caïman football pitch, next to Stad Linite.

The day will begin with reading of the message from International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach by the president of the Seychelles Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (Socga), Antonio Gopal.

The children will then head to the Roche Caïman fitness trail for the traditional fun run.

Other activities like debates, arts and visits are also on today’s programme.

The Olympic Day is much more than just a sports event, as it has become an opportunity for the world to become active and learn about the Olympic values based on its three pillars which are Move, Learn and Discover.

Move can refer to all sorts of physical activity for people of all ages and abilities, while Learn is the opportunity to look at the contribution of sport to global social issues that can affect your community, such as education, health promotion, HIV prevention, women’s and girls’ empowerment, environmental protection, peace building and local community development.

Discover is all about inviting and encouraging people to try new sports and activities that they have never done before. It is also an opportunity to introduce them to sports which they may not have easy access to or are lesser known in their region.
